I found out that I was pregnant on September 15, 2016 and it’s crazy to think that it’s been over three years since that day when I scared my husband after screaming his name from the upstairs bathroom. I took the test on a whim due to being suspicious after being quite late on my period. I didn’t expect the positive result, but wow what a beautiful surprise blessing that turned out to be!
When I became pregnant, everything was so new to me (obviously) and being the first in my group of friends to go through this beautiful miracle/natural disaster that is pregnancy, I learned so much and asked my doctor so often…”is this normal?!”
In today’s post, I thought I’d share some of the weird/awkward/unexpected memories of what happened during my first pregnancy. Maybe you can relate or pass this on to a friend who is going through this wild ride!
1.) The first major symptom of pregnancy that I experienced (besides lack of period) was extreme exhaustion. But shortly after, the 2nd major symptom that was so surprising to me was how much my boobs grew early on in pregnancy. By the end of September I couldn’t take the pain/soreness anymore and thought that a new bra was well deserved. I remember going into Motherhood Maternity for the first time and had them measure me and almost fell to the floor when I found out my usual 32B cup boobs had grown to a D cup! I still don’t know when we conceived (sometime in August) but I remember being terrified knowing that I was so early in my pregnancy and had already grew by so much. My husband wasn’t complaining lol, but after years of criticizing my little boobs, I truly didn’t realize how much I loved my itty bitty boobies. The back pain was real! By the time I gave birth and had my milk come in, I was Double Ds–truly never ever expected that!
2.) I had heard that it was common for pregnant women to be gassy, and for me it was so true, only (I guess thankfully?), mine was in the form of burping. I felt like I was burping 24/7. Like a bad case of the hiccups that you couldn’t control or turn off. I’d be mid-sentence and a little bubble would sneak out. It’d be so embarrassing, especially working in sales and always talking to people, but I found tricks and ways to “cover it up” as best as I could. But it was so frequent, that I just owned it and played the ” I’m pregnant” card. Towards the end of my pregnancy was when the gas started escaping from the other/more embarrassing way. When that happened, I definitely didn’t own it, never said excuse me; I just carried on like it never happened and prayed no one heard it. My thought was if I didn’t react then maybe they wouldn’t think it was a toot they heard but instead some other noise like a squeaky shoe. LOL ugh—not laughing at myself was the biggest challenge of all. Having a poker face was a new skill to add to the resume. Pregnancy is oh so glamorous.
3.) I turned into (even more of) a hairy beast. Hair– dark hair–everywhere. My chin, my belly button, my toes. Yup. I still have dark chin hairs and it’s something I’m so insecure about. It’s probably not all to blame on pregnancy, but man my hormones have been all over the place for the past few years.
4.) Towards the very end of my pregnancy, my nips become unrecognizable. We’re talking a dark color change and expanding from a quarter-size to a sand-dollar. This freaked me out so much, but apparently the color is for the baby to better be able to locate them for feeding. There’s no way my baby was missing those tits. Spoiler alert–they went back to normal and I’m so thankful!
5.) Incontinence is something to be expected in pregnancy, especially when that baby is kicking or sitting right on your bladder. I had my share of close-calls, but thankfully didn’t really have any issues with peeing myself until….that damn Mother’s Day pedicure. In 2017, Mother’s Day was 3 days before I ended up giving birth so I was Very Very pregnant. I had heard rumblings about certain salons not giving pedicures to pregnant women due to a pressure point that can kick off labor. My salon didn’t turn me away, but there’s something to be said about the foot massage my swollen feet experienced, because as good as it was in the moment, something happened, and that something was a little bit of tinkle running down my leg. UGH, I had to strategically get out of that chair and wiggle around enough to clean up any evidence that I pissed myself. If you are peeing yourself, girlfriend, you’re not alone!
Pregnancy is amazing– the soft flutter kicks around 20 weeks, the excitement of that first ultrasound where the baby actually looks like a baby and not the “sack” from the first scan, and every time you hear that sweet heartbeat. But pregnancy is also weird, hard, and uncomfortable to say the least. I hope you had a laugh and wish you a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth!
Share your funny pregnancy moments below if you can relate! Would love to keep the laughing going 🙂
